The Kankakee Valley Historical Society is making progress on preserving historical structures and local stories.<\/p>\n
The Society is inviting the public to come learn more about their preservation efforts plus share their own stories about life on the Kankakee at its third annual Aukiki Flapjack Breakfast to be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 from 7:00 a.m. \u2013 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion, Hall #301, 959 W. Indiana Street in Kouts, Indiana.<\/p>\n

The Aukiki Flapjack Breakfast will feature \u201cConservations on the Kankakee\u201d with local historian and storyteller and Founder of the Society, John Hodson. Mr. Hodson will present project updates and engage the public in conversations about Kankakee history and why it matters today. John Hodson: \u201cCivil War general and world-renowned author of \u201cBen Hur\u201d wrote of the Kankakee: \u2018Never, in all my world travels, have I found a more perfect spot, not a more tantalizing river.\u2019 Break bread with us on April 15th and hear more about the people and places of the historic Kankakee River.\u201d Other highlights include viewing the Everglades of the North video, interactive displays and the \u201cCollier Store.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded in 2001, the Kankakee Valley Historical Society is a 501c3 organization with a mission to promote and preserve the rich history, culture and ecology of the Kankakee Valley through wise stewardship for this and future generations. The Society is the steward of the national historic landmark for archeology of the Collier Lodge site.<\/p>\n
