2024 Collier Lodge site dig t-shirt
In the beginning of our Collier Lodge archaeological digs, local artist and KVHS member, Ruth Bicknese, did paintings of our digs. Her paintings are more of a symbolic representation as opposed to a photo documentation of our digs. Ruth captured our dig process of volunteers working the stages of an archaeological dig from in-the-ground to hitting the sifting tables. As an artistic rendering of our dig, it shows the feel of the operation. At the time of the paintings, the Collier Lodge was still standing. The Collier Lodge restoration project led to us meeting Mark at a historic preservation conference that then launched the whole 20-year Collier Lodge site digs. If it weren’t for the effort to preserve the lodge, we would have never met Mark. So, in a sense, the lodge is the mother that gave birth to our archaeological digs. Unfortunately, we were not able to save the lodge, but our archaeological digs will continue to flesh out the Kankakee River story for many years to come.
